Senior Most Likely to build a Facebook application

Senior Most Facebook applicationI guess that would be me. Yesterday I launched my first Facebook application. It’s called Senior Most. The idea behind is that seniors in high school can vote for their classmates (or themselves) for Senior Most awards. This is the project I spoke of in my post about the competition. There is a similar application that caters to the general population. My idea was to cater specifically to seniors in high school. All Facebook users can use the app (except if you haven’t been a senior in high school yet).

I would appreciate any and all feedback. You can either leave comments on this site, or within Facebook you can go to the Senior Most page and add to the discussion board. I hope to continue improving upon this application adding features as we go.

Overall, I’m happy with it as a first iteration and first Facebook application. I know that there can be improvements in the code and in the product that I will roll out as they come up.

On the technical side, I used the CodeIgniter PHP framework on a LAMP server set-up. We’ll see if there are any scaling issues. Hopefully we’ll run into that problem.

9rules announces that they’re turning back the clock

My sports blog has been a part of 9rules since July of 2006. For those who aren’t familiar with 9rules, they started out as a content network whose goal was to provide a single site for users find quality content on a wide array of topics. To do that, they allowed independent blog owners to submit their sites to 9rules, and if the folks over at 9rules thought it was quality content that would add to the 9rules community, they were invited.

9rules has gone through a lot of changes since I became a member. There have been 2 major releases, those releases saw 9rules venture into the social networking area of the web. They introduced a feature called “Notes” which basically gave users the ability to write and comment on notes written on the site. It was a sort of bulletin board that spanned a lot of different topics. They built upon that release by extending the functionality of the social features as they introduced my.9rules which allowed users to bring together a lot of their online activities into their 9rules account. Also in one of those releases was “Clips” which allowed users to post content from elsewhere that they thought was interesting.

Don’t worry if you’re lost… a lot of people were… so the folks behind 9rules (Scrivs, Mike and Tyme) are scrapping the whole thing. Well not really. But they are going back to the basics with 9rules. They’re in the process of migrating everything except member content off of 9rules and onto their new social side, it’s called Chawlk. From what I’ve seen so far it’s exactly the same as the old my.9rules it’s just separated out from the 9rules member content. I know that the guys are working tirelessly over there to get this all straight so I’ll stay tuned to see how it goes from here.

Personally, I’m glad for this change. It seemed to me that 9rules was creeping away from what they did best, and what drew me to want to become a member in the first place. I really appreciate Scrivs, Mike and Tyme’s consistent attention to 9rules and it’s members. Even when I don’t have a lot of time to be engrossed in the community, it’s still beneficial to know that there is a group out there that I’m a part of. I’ve seen that group rally behind other members that they didn’t even know, but they reached out to them, just because they were 9rules members.

Seattle SCORE – How to start a business workshop

Today I went to a workshop about starting a new business. I was an anomaly in that I already have a business. I wanted to attend the seminar to fill in the gaps  of what I’ve learned as well as meet some similar folks in the area.
It was put on by an organization called SCORE. Their aim is to help out fledgling small businesses and provide insight to running a small business. The course was taught by industry professionals with experience in the small business/startup realm. Another focus of SCORE is their counseling program where an established business person agrees to meet with a business owner to talk through business issues and give guidance. It’s kind of a mentorship program.

The highlights for me were the law session. It was really informative about how the law deals with intellectual property and how to go about protecting yourself and your intellectual property. It’s something that I’m very interested in because of the ramifications it has on the web. There is constant debate about copyright, and ownership, especially in the area of user-generated content. So I paid close attention and asked a lot of questions.

Overall I would say that it was a very beneficial investment of a day, and $85. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about starting their own business. It’s not just in Seattle either. SCORE is a national organization. I think they said that there are 55 chapters nationally, so look them up on www.score.org.

Meet the competition

There’s nothing new under the sun. We all know that. Sometimes I get a little ahead of myself though. When I had the idea for my new Facebook app, I did a cursory look for a competing application. I didn’t find one and I thought “This is great. I can be first to market with this.” Today that illusion dies.

I found a Facebook application that does a very similar thing. Initially I was totally bummed. My naive thought that I was the only one who’d thought of this was shattered and I hadn’t had time togain any perspective.

Upon reflection, “first to market” doesn’t necessarily mean “best”. Alta Vista and Yahoo! were both in the search game before Google. Despite Google’s recent stock slippage, they are definitively the leader in search. As I write this Microsoft has made an offer to buy Yahoo! To give Google a run for their marketshare. I too am making plans to gain marketshare and compete. Just because I wasn’t the first to the party, doesn’t mean I won’t be the last to leave. I putting on my sweetest party gear and ready to dance the night away. If the other guy has better moves than I do, then so be it… But I doubt that’ll happen.
